Gonzaga has landed one of the best transfers on the market. Andrew Nembhard has committed to Mark Few and the Zags. Last season as a sophomore, he averaged 11.2 pts, 3.0 reb, and 5.6 asst per game for the Gators. Nembhard chose the Zags over USC, Duke, Memphis, Georgetown, and Stanford. What lead up to this commitment? Let’s find out.
In and out of the NBA Draft
In 2019, Nembhard declared for the NBA Draft. However, he later withdrew his name, ultimately playing his sophomore season. After this year, he hired an NCAA-certified agent (which allows for a return to school), as he declared for the draft again. But on May 30th, Andrew Nembhard announced that he was withdrawing from the NBA draft and would be transferring from Florida. Schools like Duke, Oregon, and UCLA and many more immediately reached out.
Nembhard decided to trim his list to six schools on June 6th. Gonzaga, USC, Duke, Memphis, Georgetown, and Stanford made the cut. Shortly after the list was announced, a source told me the Zags were in front. However, it wasn’t a done deal yet. The same source also said that USC was pushing hard for a commitment. Memphis and Duke received some buzz during this recruitment, as well. But today, Nembhard decided to head out west and transfer to Gonzaga.
The big question now is will Nembhard apply for immediate eligibility. With 5-star guard Jalen Suggs coming in, don’t be surprised if he did sit out this year. As things stand, Andrew Nembhard has two years of eligibility left. Either way, this is a very good commit for Mark Few and his staff.
