WR Anthony Gordon does NOT commit to Virginia

Well, he did. But there was a teensy problem...

You might think wide receiver Anthony Gordon not committing to Virginia might not seem like much of a story. After all, how often to you hear about where recruits did not commit. And you’d be right…normally. However, this isn’t a normal story.

According to our good friends over at 24/7, WR Anthony Gordon, out of Imhotep Institute in Philadelphia, PA, announced that he was committing to the University of Virginia. There was just one minor problem:

Philadelphia (Pa.) Imhotep wide receiver Anthony Gordon tweeted that he committed to Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall. There was an issue though, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound wide receiver never had the scholarship offer from UVA he reported in March. According to multiple sources, Virginia had not been in contact since March and no call was made to the Virginia staff before the post on social media.

Imhotep Institute is a sort of hotbed for big time football talent. It was one of only a handful of schools that had multiple alumni that were drafted in this year’s NFL draft. Gordon had been invited to Nike’s The Opening, the premier football camp for top high school players in America. So it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility that Anthony had received and accepted an offer from Virginia. Unfortunately, it did not actually happen.

We’re hoping that it was somehow a misunderstanding. That Gordon and Virginia somehow got their wires crossed, and somehow Anthony thought he was offered a scholarship by the Cavaliers but just wasn’t. We hope that this wasn’t intentional by him. Because at best that shows extreme lack of judgment (did he think no one would find out???). At worst shows someone who is devious and will lie at all costs to get what he wants. However, we HOPE that’s not the case. Either way, it’s a really weird episode in an offseason already filled with weird episodes for Virginia. We just hope that Gordon gets back on track and puts this mess behind him.
