Who is Syracuse QB Coach Jason Beck?
Many people are raving over how good QB Garrett Shrader has looked this season for Syracuse. Shrader has improved as a passer and has led the Cuse to a 5-0 start. Last season, Shrader completed only 52.6% of his passes with 9 passing TDs on 234 attempts. This season, Shrader is completing 70.9% of his passes and already has 10 passing TDs on just 127 attempts. It’s clear that Shrader has improved and developed into a well rounded QB. And a big reason why is QBs Coach Jason Beck. Let’s take a look at the History of QB Guru Jason Beck.
Gold for UVA
Last season, Beck was the QBs Coach for UVA where Brennan Armstrong threw for 31 TDs while completing 65.2% of his passes. The UVA Offense was 2nd nationally in passing offense, 3rd in total offense, 11th in 1st downs, and 15th on 3rd down conversions. This season, Armstrong’s completion percentage has dipped from 65.2 to 52 percent and he has more INTs than TDs. There are a lot of factors that play into that, but not having Beck is the biggest. Before Brennan Armstrong last season, Beck was instrumental in the development of Cavalier QBs Bryce Perkins and Kurt Benkert. Perkins was a JUCO player who Beck helped develop into one of the best QBs in all of college football. Perkins is currently in the NFL playing for the Rams, while Benkert plays for the 49ers.
A history of success
Beck has 10 years experience as a FBS QB coach and 15 years experience as a collegiate coach. Between 2013-2021, QBs under Beck averaged 3,367 Passing yards and 514 rushing yards per season. While at BYU, he was instrumental in the development of Tayson Hill and Tanner Mangum. Hill currently plays for the New Orleans Saints.
In 2012, he was the Offensive Coordinator for Simon Fraser, a DII program. Simon Fraser was LAST in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in Offense when Beck arrived. In 2012, they ranked 1st in total offense, passing offense and scoring offense. Those results speak for themselves.
