There are 32 days until college football returns. Today we remember the 32nd winner of the Heisman Trophy, the ol’ Ball Coach, Steve Spurrier.
In 1966, in his senior year, Florida QB Steve Spurrier had one of the most decorated seasons in school history. He led the Gators to a 9-2 record, one of their best ever up to that point in their history. He passed for 2012 yards and 16 touchdowns, while sporting a 132.2 QB rating. That year he was named the SEC Player of the Year, UPI Player of the Year, won the Walter Camp Memorial Trophy, was a first team All-American, and won the 32nd Heisman Trophy ever awarded. It was the first time that a player from Florida had ever won the prestigious award.
Spurrier is in the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame. He’s also in the Florida Ring of Honor, both as a player and a coach. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986 as a player and again in 2017 as a coach.
