20 days until college football returns

There are 20 days until college football returns. Today we’ll remember one of the toughest running backs ever- the Longhorns’ #20 Earl Campbell.

Texas’ RB Earl Campbell was one of the strongest, most punishing RBs in college football history. He played for the Longhorns from 1974-1977. In his career, he racked up 4,443 yards and 40 touchdowns in 40 games. His breakout year came in 1977. Led by Campbell, the Longhorns made it to the National Championship game, before losing to the Joe Montana led Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. However, that loss couldn’t dampen the overall year that Earl had put together. In 1977, he was voted a unanimous All-American. Both the Sporting News and UPI named him the Player of the Year in college football. He won the Davey O’Brien Trophy. And to top it off, he won the Heisman Trophy.

Campbell has had his #20 retired by the Longhorns. He also is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
