Today there are only 72 days until the start of the 2019 college football season. In celebration we honor the 72nd Heisman trophy winner, Troy Smith. Smith earned 86.7% of the heisman vote for that year, which was good enough for 2nd All-time. After starting his career at the RB position and kick returner, he entered his sophomore season as the backup QB. Midway through that season Smith was named the starter.
The 2006 season is when Troy Smith really began to shine. He completed 67% of his passes while amassing 2,500 yards with 30 TDs. Also, he only threw 5 interceptions on the year while leading the Buckeyes to an undefeated season. While the 2007 BCS title game didn’t go in his favor, Smith will be most remembered by Buckeye Nation for his play against arch-rival, Michigan. In his 3 starts against the Wolverines he had 1,151 yards of total offense and 9 total touchdowns, leading the Buckeyes to a 3-0 record. We might not know much, but we do know one thing – don’t mention the name “Troy Smith” if you ever find yourself in Ann Arbor.
