67 days until college football returns

There are 67 days until college football returns. Today we continue our countdown with one of the greatest Miami Hurricanes of all time: #67 Russell Maryland.

Maryland was an absolute beast in the middle of the defensive line for some great Hurricane defenses. His spectacular play helped lead Miami to two National Championships. In 1990 alone, he racked up 96 tackles and 10.5 sacks. That led to him being named a consensus All-American. Additionally, he won the UPI Lineman of the year award. Also, he became the first Hurricane ever to win the Outland Trophy.

For his career, Maryland finished with 279 tacks, 25 TFL, and 20.5 sacks. Under his watch, Miami never lost a bowl game (including the 2 Nattys). They also never lost a home game, going 44-4 overall. Russell was also named to Miami’s Iron Arrow Honor Society. It is the highest honor the university can bestow on a person. In 2011, Maryland was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
