There are 55 days until college football returns. Today we remember the undefeated ’55 National Champion Oklahoma Sooners.
In a weird, antiquate rule quirk, the 1955 Oklahoma Sooners were already National Champions before they even took the field against the co-undefeated Maryland Terrapins in the Orange Bowl. During that time period, the National Champions were announced before the bowl games. So it would’ve been possible to lose your last game and still be National Champions.
But Oklahoma was having none of that. After falling down to the Terps 6-0, the Sooners kicked it into gear. Tommy McDonald scored on a 4-yard plunge to give Oklahoma the lead. Jay O’Neal added another TD to put the Sooners up 14-6. With Maryland driving late in the 4th, the Sooners Carl Dodd intercepted Maryland QB Lynn Beightol’s pass, taking it 82 yards to the house to seal the game. The Sooners won 20-6, justifying their already won National Title.
