There are only 53 days left until the return of college football. To celebrate, we remember College Football’s unofficial leader in career sacks, Hugh Green, who finished his career with 53 sacks. Green played defensive end for the Pittsburgh Panthers from 1977-1980. He was also drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1981 NFL draft, and was the #7 overall pick.
After hearing a list of Hugh Green’s accolades it really comes as no surprise that he is the all-time leader in sacks. As a freshman Green was a 2nd team All-American, and was a consensus All-American from his sophomore year on. Green was also a 4 time First-team All-Big East. Finally, his senior year in 1980 he won the Walter Camp award, Maxwell award, Lombardi award, and finished 2nd in the Heisman voting. This may have been one of the last times that a defensive lineman stood a chance at winning the Heisman. Check back tomorrow to see what is next on our Countdown to College Football.
