4-Star DE Mike Morris Flips Commitment to Michigan

Top 2019 DE Mike Morris had been committed to the Florida State Seminoles since February 27, 2016. Today Morris has decided that his college football career will head in a difference direction. The talented defensive end announced his decommitment from the Noles and his commitment to Michigan. The Wolverines have a great recruiting track record, so this does not come as a surprise. Although, his ties to the Florida State program run deep. Morris’ father played for FSU during his college career, and the Florida native has been around the program for years. However, after Jimbo Fisher and his staff left town the relationship between Morris and FSU has taken a hit. Michigan took advantage of this, and began building a solid relationship back in March, when the DE Michigan’s campus for the first time.

Morris visited Ann Arbor this weekend for his official visit, and that was all he needed to switch his commitment. The Wolverines rolled out the red carpet and the DE left more than impressed. This commitment brings Michigan’s 2019 recruiting class to #10 in the nation and #1 in the B1G. Of the 21 commitments to the Wolverines 10 of them have a 4-star or higher ranking.

Commitment Analysis

Standing at 6’5″ and 255 pounds the defensive lineman already has the size to compete at the college level. However, Morris’ future seems to be at the SSDE position, so he will have to add some weight. Luckily his frame has the ability to comfortably hold an additional 30-40 pounds. He has the length to be a solid pass rusher, but excels in stopping the run. Once the necessary strength and weight is added Morris should be able to hold the edge and give B1G running backs some problems. The Florida product plays for American Heritage, which plays other big time programs in the Sunshine State. Having experience against tougher competition might positively affect his ability to see the field earlier in his career.

Not surprisingly, Michigan defensive line coach Greg Mattison did a wonderful job with this recruitment. Mattison has the ability to sculpt NFL talent, and that had to have caught Morris’ eye. Mike Morris could easily be next in line.
