There are 35 days until college football returns. Today we remember when Baylor LB Mike Singletary recorded 35 tackles in a single game.
In 1978, the Baylor Bears were in the throes of a season in which they would go 3-8. There was very little to cheer for. However, there was a star on their defense. A brilliant, blinding star in the form of sophomore LB Mike Singletary. His tenacity on defense was responsible for keeping the outmatched Bears in many games. None of this was more evident than when Baylor took on the University of Houston in the fourth game of the season. The Bears were winless up until that point and needed a pick-me-up. And Singletary delivered.
He recorded 35 tackles against the Cougars. It would’ve stood as an NCAA record. However, the NCAA didn’t keep defensive statistics until 2000. So it’s the unofficial record. Regardless, it’s an unreal game from an unreal player. The Bears would still fall short 20-18, but they had their future superstar. Singletary would go on and record a school record 232 tackles that year. He would later be enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame.
