Head Coach Travis Steele and Xavier received some bad news as top combo guard Samari Curtis decommitted. Curtis is listed as a 4-star and a top 100 player in the nation. This leaves the Musketeers with just one commitment in the 2019 class. Although the loss of Samari stings, Xavier still has a commitment from 4-star SF, Elias King, which still happens to be a strong class. Due to King’s high ranking, Xavier still ranks as the #17 class in the nation.

Curtis’ stock has been rising and it only makes sense for him to take a step back and make the right decision. The high-scoring guard scored 50 points in a single game this year, and his stock has risen ever since. In addition to being a scoring machine, Samari has started to become effective defensively. The more of a well-rounded player that he becomes the more offers he will find coming his way. Curtis may have to add a little bit of weight, but that will come in time. However, the most impressive thing about Samari is his drive to be the best. The Dayton Daily News quoted Curtis as saying…
“We want to get our name out there, like try to change the culture around here,” Curtis said. “We don’t want it to be just little ol’ Xenia no more.”
Dayton, Xavier, and Cincinnati are currently the only schools who have offered the Ohio native. Although other schools are beginning to take interest, Curtis has claimed that Xavier is still atop the list. It makes sense that Curtis wants to take a step back and make sure he is making the right decision. These kinds of things are quite common with coaching changes. Although Xavier hired within the program, Travis Steele is not the head coach that Samari committed to. At this point, we expect Curtis to take his time and make certain he ends up where he wants to be.
