There are only 58 days until the return of college football. To celebrate we remember one of the most incredible stats in the record books. Kansas RB Tony Sands ran the ball 58 times in a single game back in the 1991 season. With the current climate of air raid offenses in College Football, this is a record that will likely never be broken.
With those 58 rushes, Tony Sands found the end zone 4 times, while also piling up 396 rushing yards. Kansas went on to win that game 53-29 against Missouri. Also, this game happened to be Kansas’ last game of the 1991 season and Sands’ final game of his senior year. What a way to finish off your career, Tony! This victory gave the Jayhawks their first winning season in 10 years at the time. The previous record was held by Minnesota’s Kent Kitzmann, who rushed the ball 57 times against Illinois back in 1977. Check back tomorrow to see what is next on our Countdown to College Football!
