There are 38 days until college football returns. Today we remember the largest comeback in NCAA history- when Michigan St scored 38 unanswered points to stun Northwestern 41-38.
In 2006, after a promising 3-0 start to the season, the Michigan St Spartans were scuffling. After losing their next 4 games, they needed a win. However, after the Wildcats scored a touchdown with 9:54 left in the 3rd quarter to put them up 38-3, things looked grim. Little did Sparty fans know at the time that they were about to witness history.
Quarterback Drew Stanton hit RB Jehuu Caulcrick on an 18-yard touchdown to cut into the deficit. After a Wildcats punt and another Spartan touchdown, the comeback was on. After a barrage of Michigan St touchdowns, which included a blocked punt for a touchdown, coupled with stalled Northwestern drives, the game was tied at 38-38. With 3:32 left in the game, the Wildcats had the ball at their own 15, needing only a FG to win the game. However, on the first play of the series, they were intercepted. The Spartans drained the clock and kicked a go-ahead FG with only seconds left. The Wildcats got the ball back, but one last desperate attempt was unsuccessful, and the Spartans comeback was complete, 41-38.
