There are 37 days until college football returns. Today we remember Oklahoma St RB Barry Sanders’ NCAA record 37 rushing touchdowns in one season.
In 1988, the Pokes’ Barry Sanders put together one of the greatest seasons in college football history. He set many NCAA records, including most rushing yards in a year (2,628), most games with 300+ rushing yards in a season and a career (4), most points scored in a year (234), and most rushing touchdowns (37). (Note- Sanders actually scored 42 rushing touchdowns for the year. However, prior to 2002, the NCAA did not include bowl game statistics in yearly totals.) He averaged an insane 7.6 yds/carry to lead the nation. Sanders also had 5 consecutive games of 200+ yards rushing with 2 touchdowns in 11 consecutive games. He won the Heisman in a runaway. Sanders was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.
