22 days until college football returns

There are 22 days until college football returns. Today we remember one of the all time greats, Boston College’s #22, QB Doug Flutie.

Doug Flutie is one of the most iconic players in college football history. He played for the Eagles from 1981 – 1984. In 1984 during his senior year, he put together one of the greatest seasons of all time. Flutie won the Maxwell Award, the Walter Camp Award, the Davey O’Brien Award, the UPI Player of the Year, the Sporting News Player of the Year, was a unanimous All-American, and won the coveted Heisman Trophy.

Flutie’s most famous play came in that magical ’84 season against Miami. Battling against Heisman hopeful Miami QB Bernie Kosar, Flutie had a little magic up his sleeve. Down 45-41 with only :28 left, Flutie and BC took over at their own 22. After advancing the ball 30 more yards, only :06 remained. That set up the Hail Flutie:

Doug Flutie’s number 22 would be retired by Boston College. He would finish his career with 10,579 yards passing, an NCAA record at the time. He would also add 67 passing touchdowns. However, none were more famous than the Hail Flutie. Doug is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
