33 days until college football returns

There are 33 days until college football returns. Today we remember Pittsburgh’s #33, the great Tony Dorsett.

Tony Dorsett burst onto the college football scene in 1973 for the University of Pittsburgh. He became the first freshman since 1944 to be named a first team All-American. That year he rushed for 1586 yards and led the Panthers to their first winning season in 10 years.

Three games into his sophomore season, he had already broken the school record for career rushing yards. His 303 yards against Notre Dame during his junior year set the school record for rushing yards in a game. In 1976, his senior year was a season for the ages. He won the Heisman, Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, UPI Player of the Year, led the country in rushing with 2150 yards, and he led the Panthers to the National Title. He became the only player in NCAA history with 3 season of 1500+ yards rushing.

Tony went on to be the 2nd overall pick in the NFL Draft in 1977. He has his #33 retired for Pittsburgh. He is also a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
